About Jammu & Kashmir Public Service Comission (JKPSC) Examination

The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission was Constituted on 31-03-2011 by His Excellency the Governor of J&K under article 128 & 133 of constitution of India, and its main function is to recruit candidates in the various post/Jobs in Jammu & Kashmir. JKPSC is an autonomous body, and hence it organizes competitions on merit-based system and rules of reservation. After its creation, JKPSC has served a very useful purpose to establish transparency and objectivity in the process of selection of Civil Servants besides making a great impact on the over all structure of the administrative system of the region.

Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission or JKPSC can be credited to the development of the concept of state level competitive examinations for the government jobs, which was initialized in the early 1950s. But it is pertinent to note that civil service examinations in Jammu and Kashmir region has a history of as early as in the year 1941 when the then Maharaja Hari Singh set the motion. It was for the first time that a candidate from the state of Jammu and Kashmir had secured the toppers position in civil service exams and this man was Agha Nasir Ali. The official establishment of JKPSC in 1957 after the enactment of Kashmir Civil Service Rules of 1954 put the more concrete regulatory measures for the civil service hiring in the region.

JKPSC remains the oldest constitutional body that is responsible for the civil services in Jammu and Kashmir State, whereby its offices are located in Srinagar and Jammu in a process referred to as the Darbar Move. The appointed Head of the commission in this case is picked by the state governor with responsibilities in recruitment and policy making. This special practice of shifting the offices was started by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1872 to avoid very hot and humid or very cold season since JKPSC concerns with the stability continued good functioning of its offices in both Srinagar, called as Summer capital as well as in Jammu, treated as Winter capital of J&K State.
